Apply for the Biopsy Catchment Biobank Investigators Award

Applicants must propose original research that contributes to the understanding of the clinical and/or health economic benefits for biobanks of utilizing dislodged tumor cells following core needle biopsies recovered via the Crow’s Nest™ Biopsy Catchment System.

The Crow’s Nest™ Biospy Catchment System is used at the point-of-procedure site for core needle biopsies. This portable, disposable tool is capable of creating two specimens from the original singular tissue specimen. This second specimen created contains viable cells, free from exposure to formalin and with minimal pre-analytic variables – by utilizing only the dislodged cells on the needle that would have otherwise been discarded as medical waste. This material represents a valuable, untapped resource for biobanks that is fully representative of the parent tissue core yet is currently discarded with the needle.

Grant Eligibility and Purpose

Corramedical is seeking to solicit the expertise in the biobanking community and develop evidence for the utility of these recovered cells or analytes inherent to them for downstream research needs. Emerging technologies in multiple ‘omic fields have the potential to benefit from this clinical material and drive their adoption into clinical practice.

The winning proposal will contain froward-thinking integrated biobanking workflows that will bring value to (a) the biobanking community, and to (b) downstream users in the biomarker diagnostic ecosphere in academia and pharma.

Goal

  • Proposals capable of demonstrating specific or multiomic-centric biobanking approaches with plans on how to test and confirm yields of the informative analytes from the material recovered by using the Crow’s Nest device will be prioritized. Researchers should be willing to engage with the oncology, pathology, and/or interventional radiology communities, sharing insights and findings from their work.
  • This 2025 grant cycle is open to U.S. -based applicants. Eligibility is maintained for applicants who may also be recipients of funding from external sources.
  • Recipients are expected to acknowledge the Crow’s Nest™ Biopsy Catchment System in the methods section of their manuscripts.
  • Applicants and grant recipients may speak with a Corramedical-affiliated pathologist for a free consultation on your project.

Selection

A total of $15,000 will be awarded to three individuals or their institutions to carry out their proposal and demonstrate feasibility. Included in the award will be a number of specifically designed Crow’s Nest devices for the targeted analyte. The number of devices provided will be commensurate with the needs of each winning proposal’s protocol.

Award

A 500-word maximum proposal detailing the role of the cell(s) or analyte(s) to be recovered, their potential role as a biomarker or use in clinical investigative purposes and how they will tested will be required.
